The European hedgehog, also known as the West European hedgehog or common hedgehog, is a species of hedgehog that is native to Europe. They can be found from the Iberian Peninsula and Italy in the north to the Scandinavian Peninsula in the south, and as far west as the British Isles. Among hedgehogs, albino hedgehogs or "golden" hedgehogs occasionally appear. It is said that these hedgehogs have a pair of rare recessive genes, so their eyes are black and their spines are milky white. However, strictly speaking, they are not true albino hedgehogs.
